Westbrook broke Oscar Robertson’s record of 41 triple-doubles in a season over the weekend, with 50 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists against the Denver Nuggets. He also made a 36-foot three-pointer at the buzzer to win the game. As if this wasn’t enough, Westbrook made his triple-double average official in Denver.
An interesting footnote to all of this is that he spent the night before the game playing $30/$60 Texas hold’em at Colorado’s Ameristar Black Hawk casino.
This is all very interesting considering that Phil Hellmuth once said that Westbrook is a pro-level player. Given that he visits casinos in other teams’ states, it’s not hard to see why Westbrook is so good.
During the NBA regular season, Westbrook averaged a league-leading 31.9 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 10.4 assists. The fact that he led the league in scoring and also notched a triple-double is nothing short of amazing.
Of course, the run isn’t over for the 6’3″ guard yet because his Oklahoma City Thunder take on the Houston Rockets in the first round of the NBA playoffs. Houston is favored in this series, but the way that Westbrook and the Thunder have been playing means anything could happen.
Unfortunately for Westbrook, Texas doesn’t have any legal casinos, meaning he’ll have to get his poker fix through online sites during the series. And if they win the series, he’ll likely stay in Texas to face the 2-seeded San Antonio Spurs, provided they beat the Memphis Grizzlies.
