Molly’s Game Trailer Released – “Not a Poker Movie”

Sunday, August 27th, 2017

mollys-game-pokerMost agree that there hasn’t been a great poker movie since Rounders. This leaves high hopes for Molly’s Game, the upcoming film about high stakes poker hostess Molly Bloom.

But if you’re hoping for a movie to rival Rounders, you might be severely disappointed. The trailer was recently released. And it mainly focuses on Bloom’s interactions with her lawyer (Idris Elba) and father (Kevin Costner).

The trailer also shows brief glimpses of the poker games that Bloom ran. This includes scenes with Michael Cera, who plays a generic movie star because the players/actors’ real names have been changed.

Director Aaron Sorkin Confirms that this isn’t a Poker Movie

Molly’s Game director Aaron Sorkin did an interview with Entertainment Weekly. And Sorkin confirmed what the preview indicates – this movie is more about Bloom than it is the poker action.

Listen, if you’re a poker player, you’ll enjoy the poker scenes. But it’s not a poker movie,” Sorkin said. “No, we never care who wins or loses a game. The movie is about her and what happened to her.

“And particularly two relationships in her life: the relationship she has with her criminal lawyer, played by Idris Elba, and her relationship with her father, Kevin Costner.”

Viewers will Have to Look Deeper into the Story

As mentioned before, the actors who took part in these underground poker games will have generic games. This means we won’t get an inside depiction of Tobey Maguire, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Leonardo DiCaprio, or Alex Rodriguez.

Instead, those who watch the film and are unaware of the background story must research the matter themselves.

Long story short, Molly’s Game is Hollywood at its finest – casting a big-name actress in Jessica Chastain to play in a fast-paced drama that’s as much about Russian thugs as it is poker.

The film comes out in theaters on November 22, 2017.

Michael Cera To Be In Molly’s Game Poker Movie

Monday, September 12th, 2016

michael-cera-mollys-gameMolly’s Game, the upcoming film about a major Hollywood poker ring, has already attracted talented actors such as Idris Elba and Jessica Chastain. Now, it looks like Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim, Arrested Development) will likely join the cast.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Cera is in talks to play a character named Player X, “an elite celebrity player who develops a unique relationship with Bloom.”

Molly Bloom shot to infamy a few years ago, when she hosted underground poker games for some of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities. Ben Affleck, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Tobey Maguire were just some of the stars who frequented these games.

In June 2014, Bloom released a book called Molly’s Game: From Hollywood’s Elite to Wall Street’s Billionaire Boys Club, My High-Stakes Adventure in the World of Underground Poker.

It wasn’t long until elite Hollywood screenwriter Aaron Sorkin made it his mission to adapt this book into a film – one in which he’d make his directorial debut.

Mark Gordon will produce the movie and Amy Pascal (former Sony Pictures CEO) will co-produce it under her Pascal Pictures company.

Going back to Cera, it’s unclear how his Player X character will be handled. He could either be portrayed as a specific celebrity, like Maguire, or be a composite of different celebrities.

Cera has plenty of work in between now the filming date for Molly’s Game.

Fresh off lending his voice to Sony’s Sausage Party Warner Bros’ Lego Batman Movie (opens Feb. 10), he’ll also star in Captain Dad with Catherine Keener and Will Ferrell.
