Doyle Brunson to Play in 2017 WSOP – Chasing Bracelet 11

Sunday, May 21st, 2017

doyle-brunson-poker-roomDoyle Brunson hasn’t played in a WSOP event since 2013. But he announced that he’s seriously considering playing in some 2017 WSOP tournaments.

“I actually am thinking about playing all the 10k events. Depends on my wife’s health issues,” Brunson tweeted.

$10k buy-in events have become popular among top bracelet earners like Phil Hellmuth because they have small field sizes and large payouts. That said, it’s no surprise why Brunson is interested in these kinds of tourneys.

But what’s surprising is the simple fact that the Texas Dolly would even consider playing the WSOP again.

After announcing his retirement from the series in 2011 – due to the strain it puts on his body – Brunson played in the 2013 WSOP Main Event. He made a solid run that year, finishing 409th place for a $28,063 payout.

However, this was generally thought to be an anomaly for the now 83-year-old. Brunson will prove that this isn’t the case, though, if he plays in all of the $10k events.

Currently, Brunson has 10 gold bracelets, which puts him in a tie with Johnny Chan and Phil Ivey for second place all time. Given that both Chan and Ivey are more interested in business pursuits these days, Brunson would solidify his second-place standing by winning a bracelet this summer.

But he’d have to go on an all-time heater to catch Hellmuth, who has a record-14 gold bracelets.

Regardless of how Doyle finishes up, it will be great to see him playing meaningful tournament poker again. After all, he’s sometimes called the Godfather of Poker since he was one of the original WSOP participants.

These days, Brunson mostly sticks to high stakes cash games at Bobby’s Room (Bellagio) and the Ivey Room (Aria). But it’s a good bet that he still has the skills to take down a big tourney.
