After four days of grinding through the huge field, Canada’s Pablo Mariz emerged victorious with a $1,221,407 payout. The 27-year-old now has $1,310,867 in career tournament winnings.

Mariz, a Montreal native, is an amateur poker player who traveled to Las Vegas to play in the event with friends. “We come here every year, grinding small events hoping to hit something big and we finally did,” he said.

It wasn’t easy for Mariz to make it to the top, given the large number of notable players. Pros who finished high include: Matt Affleck (31st), Jessica Dawley (30th), Lisa Hamilton (26th), Kenny Hallaert (17th), Kevin O’Donnell (16th), Ralph Perry (12th), and Senovio Ramirez (10th).

Upon reaching the final table, Mariz continued building his chip stack with several eliminations. He knocked out Hector Martin (9th), Yuriy Boyko (6th), and Bryce Yockey (5th).

He met Dejuante Alexander heads-up to decide the title. Alexander held a small chip advantage, but quickly lost the edge when his pocket 3’s faltered in a big pot.

With just 13 big blinds remaining, Alexander went all-in with pocket aces, but Mariz improved his pocket 3’s and won the hand along with the tournament.

Thanks to his Millionaire Maker victory, Mariz now plans on extending his stay in Vegas.

“I think we are going to be staying the rest of the summer, at least until the Main Event is over. I’m going for WSOP Player of the Year now,” he said.
