Pizzeria Waiter Wins $1m at EPT Prague

patrick-serda-ept-pragueOne of the most-exciting things about poker is that anybody from any profession can win big on the felt. Case in point, Patrick Serda, a pizzeria waiter, recently earned CA$1 million in the 2016 EPT €10,000 High Roller.

While an experienced amateur, Serda doesn’t consider himself a professional player, which makes this second-place tournament effort all the more impressive.

“[It was] pretty surreal for the most part. I mean, it hasn’t hit a bank account yet, it’s just in my online account,” said Serda. “I haven’t made any plans, but it’s pretty nice in the end.”

The EPT Prague High Roller featured over 400 entries, but this didn’t stop Serda from playing like one of the pros. In the end, he faced off against William Kassouf, and was willing to make a deal, despite having a larger chip lead.

The deal gave Kassouf a €532,000 cut of the prize pool, while Serda took home €719,000 — or $1 million when converted to Canadian dollars.

As CBC News reports, Serda’s immediate plans are to travel to the Bahamas for the PCA, and Australia for the Aussie Millions.

“Obviously there’s some confidence. I don’t think I would be playing any tournaments that I didn’t think I could win,” Serda said when asked if he thinks he can win.

The Winnipeg native was also asked if he plans on quitting his job at Pizzeria Gusto.

“I’m super happy to go back,” he said. “I love it there — great people and great regulars — and I’d be happy to go back.”

While this is by far Serda’s biggest tournament score, he’s had some moderate success over the past few years. He has nearly $170,000 in winnings across over a dozen tourney cashes.

And given that he’s added another $1 million to his bankroll (pre-taxes), Serda should continue building on this total.
