Seven Card Razz

Seven Card Razz

The game of Seven Card Razz is like Seven Card Stud turned on its head. Sometimes referred to as Seven Card Stud Low, Seven Card Razz is played by basically the same rules as its stud counterpart. However, when it comes to the end of the game the player with the worst 5-card hand wins the pot, rather than the player with the best hand.

If you want to play Seven Card Razz then the first step is to familiarize yourself with the rules of Seven Card Stud. Luckily it’s an easy enough game to learn. When the game begins the dealer deals 2 face down cards to each player and 1 face up card. Based on these cards the players choose to fold, bet, call or raise in a round of betting. In three subsequent rounds of betting the players receive 4 more face up cards each, for a total of 7 cards. In Seven Card Stud the player who can make the best 5-card hand from their 7 cards is the winner. However, in Seven Card Razz it is the worst hand that wins.

What exactly makes a poker hand low in Seven Card Razz? A hand without pairs and low numbers make a good hand in Seven Card Razz. Straights and Flushes do not count against a hand. Therefore, the best possible hand (or worst possible hand, depending how you look at it) would be A-2-3-4-5. Other good hands in Seven Card Razz include A-2-3-5-6, A-2-4-5-6, A-3-4-5-6, 2-3-4-5-6 and so on. As you can see, Seven Card Razz really is Seven Card Stud turned on its head and can be a fun twist on this popular poker game.
