Anthony Gregg – Biggest 2013 WSOP Winner with $4.8m Payout

Sunday, June 30th, 2013

Entering this weekend, Benny Chen was the biggest winner of the 2013 WSOP after he took down the Event #6 “Millionaire Maker” along with $1.2 million. However, this total has been blown away by Anthony Gregg since he recently won the Event #47 $111,111 One Drop along with $4,830,619. Gregg captured this prize after navigating though an interesting 166-player field, which included both top poker pros and businessmen.

One of these businessmen was Skylar Capital Management CEO Bill Perkins. Entering the final day, where just four players remained, Perkins held a slight chip lead over Gregg. However, there was no safety in this lead as Perkins was quickly eliminated along with Antonio Esfandiari.

Esfandiari was a very interesting story throughout this event because he won the WSOP Big One for One Drop and $18.34 million last year. But he was unable to repeat in this year’s smaller One Drop tournament after being knocked out just before Perkins.

This left Gregg and Chris Klodnicki playing for the massive $4.83 million top prize. These two skilled veterans battled back and forth for well over an hour, but Gregg was finally able to gain the upper hand and eliminate Klodnicki. On the final hand, a short-stacked Klodnicki shoved on the flop with an inside straight draw, and Gregg called with top pair. The board helped neither player, which gave Gregg the victory.

Thanks to his latest score, the Columbia, Maryland native now doubles his winnings to an impressive $8,631,300. He’s also the biggest winner at the 2013 WSOP, though this will change when the Main Event finishes up in November.

Dan Shak sues Beth Shak over Massive Shoe Collection

Monday, June 25th, 2012

In a story that seems better suited for The Onion or a Saturday Night Live skit, former poker couple Dan and Beth Shak are in a bitter post-divorce battle over a massive shoe collection. Getting into the specifics, Beth Shak has around 1,200 designer label shoes that are collectively worth $1 million. If you’re doing the math, that’s an average of $833 per pair of shoes!

Apparently, Dan Shak wasn’t happy when he heard about how much the shoes were worth because they weren’t included in the divorce settlement. Considering the fact that he thinks the $1 million in shoes could’ve given him at least another $350k in the divorce, Dan has chosen to take Beth to court. An excerpt from his lawsuit that was printed in the New York Post reads as follows:

In the summer of 2011, Daniel became aware that Beth owned and failed to disclose an extensive . . . collection of Christian Louboutin shoes . . . and other high-end designer shoes and bags. Dan trusted his wife and was not inspecting his home to try to find inventory or secret rooms.

The thing that really sticks out here is how Dan Shak is trying to say that Beth hid the shoes in a secret room. She responded to this thinly-veiled accusation by saying, “I’m shaking my head over this whole thing. He is saying he didn’t know the closet in our master bedroom existed.”

On the surface, it doesn’t seem like either member of this former couple is doing too well. Beth claims to be a poker pro – despite not having cashed in a tourney since 2010 – while Dan saw his hedge fund company, SHK Asset Management, lose millions of dollars after the gold market plummeted. And the shoe lawsuit is just the couple’s latest debacle.

WSOP $1 Million Buy-in to break Records

Friday, April 13th, 2012

What began as a vision several months ago has become reality since the WSOP $1 million buy-in tournament is definitely going to happen from July1st-3rd. Dubbed “The Big One for One Drop,” this tourney already has 30 players confirmed with some of the biggest names in poker having made a commitment.

But before we get into the confirmed players, it’s worth mentioning that this tournament is already guaranteed to set two records. First off, the WSOP $1 million buy-in tournament will feature the biggest buy-in ever; the previously largest tourney was the $250k Aussie Millions High Roller.

As for the second record, the 30 confirmed players and interesting prize pool distribution will see the winner walk away with almost $12.3 million of the prize pool. Assuming this happens as planned, it would easily beat the $12 million that Jamie Gold received for winning the 2006 WSOP Main Event.

With such a massive prize involved, it’s no wonder why the top names in poker will be entering this event. Some of those confirmed include Gus Hansen, Patrik Antonius, Erik Seidel, Daniel Negreanu, Johnny Chan, Tom Dwan, Tony G, Dan Shak, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier and Jonathan Duhamel.

In addition to this stellar lineup of players, there will also be some prominent businessmen joining the tourney. These guys include Guy Laliberté, Bobby Baldwin (former player too), Phil Ruffin, Andy Beal, Sean O’Donnell, Richard Yong, Paul Phua and Arnaud Mimran.

The Big One for One Drop will see 10% of the buy-ins go towards Laliberté’s One Drop foundation, while a little under $27 million is available for the actual tourney. We still have plenty of time before July 1st, so both the number of participants and prize money could grow before the tournament starts. But even if it stays the same, we’re still in for quite a special event come WSOP time!

Dan Shak’s Condo goes for $7.4m

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Poker pro Dan Shak proved to be recession-proof after selling his lofty New York City condo for $7.4 million. Shak, who bought the home back in 2005 with his ex-wife Beth Shak, originally paid $7.2 million for the property. However, he was somehow able to swing a $200,000 profit while selling it seven years later. Perhaps he did some major upgrades?

The popular reason for Shak selling the condo is that he lost around $7 million in the gold market, and needed a way to make some quick cash. In fact, Shak’s losses caused him to sell off a remaining stake in $850 million worth of future gold contracts, which caused a market scare. This coupled with the aforementioned condo sale had many thinking that he was desperate for money. However, Shak has consistently denied selling his condo to cover gold market losses.

In any case, what is known is that Shak gave his ex-wife $3.25 million when they got divorced in 2008 so that he could keep the property. And one certainly can’t blame Shak for wanting to keep his condo when they look at the pictures. There’s plenty of exquisite decor and excellent terrace views of New York.

As for Shak’s poker career, he’s made over $2.7 million in live tournament cashes, and this includes a victory in the 2010 Aussie Millions Main Event ($1,107,553). In addition to this, he also finished second in the 2011 NAPT Uncasville, which was good for $254,000. In regards to his ex-wife Beth Shak, she hasn’t fared quite so well in the poker world lately, having made only $29,955 in the last two years. Her crowning poker achievement came when she finished second in a 2007 WSOP $3,000 Hold’em event ($328,683); this helped her land a gig as a Full Tilt Poker team member.
