Is The WSOP Headed For South Africa?

The World Series of Poker has announced that it may be headed for South Africa. WSOP Africa is talking about offering two non-bracelet events in October at the Emerald Resort and Casino. WSOP events in South Africa would signify that the poker organization is expanding its international reach and increasing their influence on the international poker circuit.

Up until a few years ago, WSOP events were held only in the United States. For the last few years, WSOP spread their reach with WSOP Europe in London. However, if the World Series wants to compete with the World Poker Tour, PokerStars European Poker Tour and other international events, it is important for them to begin holding events in other areas of the world.

If the WSOP Africa events are scheduled they will take place on October 24 to 31. The first event will be a 3-day pot limit Omaha game with a $1,100 buy-in, $300 re-buys. The event will be capped at 200 players. The second event will be a 4-day no limit Hold’em event. The event will be capped at 500 players.

The CEO of the Emerald Resort and Casino in South Africa spoke about the possibility of holding a WSOP event. He said, “Poker has, over the past half-decade, accelerated in popularity. Our Emerald Poker Series, and its growing fields, is testament to the unlimited success of the sport. It was only natural to follow-on its popularity with the greatest tournament on the planet.”
